Angst hoort bij de normale ontwikkeling van kinderen. Er is sprake van overmatige angst als de angst niet in verhouding staat met de bedreiging van buitenaf of niet meer past bij de leeftijd. We spreken pas van een angststoornis als een kind erdoor belemmerd wordt in het dagelijks functioneren en niet meer kan genieten van normale levenservaringen.
